About Cretaceous Park
The Parque Cretácico is next to the Cal Orck'o quarry, about 5 km northwest of downtown Sucre, on land belonging to a cement factory. In 1994, workers found thousands of dinosaur footprints on the limestone wall, left about 68 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period, when that spot was the shore of a lake.
Movements of the Earth's crust lifted the rock layer to almost vertical, and what had been a muddy floor became a cliff of roughly 65,000 m². Researchers have mapped more than 12,000 footprints, from various types of dinosaurs, both carnivores and herbivores, forming trails that cross the wall. It is one of the largest known dinosaur track sites.
The park has viewpoints facing the cliff, a museum with fossils and explanations, and life-size dinosaur replicas spread around the garden. At certain times there are guided visits that descend closer to the wall, with helmets.
The cliff is visible from the viewpoints, and the tracks show up better with the right light: bring binoculars or use the viewing scopes at the overlooks. Confirm guided-visit times before you go.
