About Metropolitan Cathedral of Sucre

The Catedral Metropolitana de Sucre occupies one side of Plaza 25 de Mayo and was built over more than 150 years, from the mid-16th to the early 18th century, which explains the mix of styles from Renaissance to Baroque. The white tower, with its clock and statues of saints, is one of the city’s symbols.

The interior has gilded wooden altars, colonial paintings and a carved choir of choir stalls. Beside the church is the chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Sucre’s patron. The image, painted in 1601 by the friar Diego de Ocaña, is covered with gold, silver and gemstone jewelry offered by the faithful over the centuries.

The Museo Catedralicio, with its entrance next to the Cathedral, gathers colonial religious art—paintings, sculptures, goldsmith work and liturgical vestments—and allows visitors to see the chapel and parts of the temple with a guide.

The Cathedral remains active, with daily masses. The museum visit has specific hours and is guided; confirm before you go. In September, the festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe brings processions and dances through the city.
