About House of Liberty

The Casa de la Libertad is on the north side of Plaza 25 de Mayo, in a building that belonged to the Jesuits and housed the Universidad San Francisco Xavier, founded in 1624. In the old chapel, now the Salón de la Independencia, the deputies from the provinces of Alto Peru signed on August 6, 1825 the act that created the republic, which took the name Bolívia in honor of Simón Bolívar.

The hall preserves the carved wooden ceiling, the pulpit and the signing table, with the original independence act displayed in a glass case. On the walls are portraits of Bolívar, of Sucre and of Bolivian presidents. One of Bolívar’s portraits is considered by many to be the most faithful to his appearance.

The other rooms tell the story of the independence, with weapons, flags, documents and personal items. There is a room dedicated to Juana Azurduy de Padilla, who fought in the war of independence and became a national heroine, and another exhibiting the republic’s flags. The colonial courtyard with arcades is part of the visit.

Visits are guided and have specific hours; the museum usually closes on Mondays. Confirm before you go.
