About Puerto de Frutos
The Puerto de Frutos is Tigre's best-known market. It's on the riverbank, where boats used to dock bringing fruits, timber and wicker from the Delta islands to sell in town and in Buenos Aires.
Over time, the fruit trade declined and the place became a large market for crafts and home decoration. Today there are hundreds of shops and stalls in warehouses and open-air aisles.
The most traditional product is the wicker and reed from the Delta, turned into baskets, furniture, lamps and chairs. There are also wooden pieces, leather, ceramics, textiles, plants and regional products such as sweets, preserves and yerba mate.
The market has restaurants and food stalls, and boats for Delta tours depart from nearby points. Delta station, the terminus of the Tren de la Costa, is next to the market.
