About Museo Casa de Sarmiento
The Museo Casa de Sarmiento is on an island in the Delta del Paraná, on the bank of the river Sarmiento, about a 30-minute boat ride from Tigre center. It was the retreat house of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, president of Argentina between 1868 and 1874.
Sarmiento began visiting the place from 1855 and was an enthusiast of the Delta. He advocated populating the islands and encouraged the cultivation of wicker, which still supplies the region's handicrafts.
The house is wooden and simple, built in the middle of the island's forest. To protect it, it was covered by a large glass structure, and the visitor sees it as if it were in a display case. It was declared a national historic monument in 1966.
Around it there is a park with trails in the Delta vegetation and the dock where the commuter launches stop. The visit is a good way to get to know the islands with a historical focus.
