About Suermondt-Ludwig Museum

The Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum is Aachen’s municipal art museum and one of the largest municipal museums in Germany. The story began in 1877 with a residents’ association that donated works to form the collection. In 1882 the businessman Barthold Suermondt donated more than a hundred paintings, and the museum opened in his name the following year.

Since 1901 the museum has occupied the Villa Cassalette, a neo-Renaissance mansion built in the 1880s for industrialist Eduard Cassalette on Wilhelmstraße. The building has been expanded several times. The couple Peter and Irene Ludwig, collectors from Aachen, made hundreds of donations and loans, and their name was added to the museum’s.

The holdings range from Antiquity to the early 20th century. The medieval sculpture collection is a highlight, alongside painting from the late Middle Ages to the Baroque, stained glass and decorative arts. The print cabinet houses works by Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya, and the painting collection includes names such as Lucas Cranach the Elder. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
