About Aachen Cathedral Treasury
The cathedral treasury brings together objects accumulated over about 1,200 years by the church founded by Charlemagne. The collection grew with the cathedral’s importance as the tomb of Charlemagne and Otto III, a coronation site for kings and a pilgrimage destination. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978 together with the cathedral.
The exhibition occupies about 600 square metres across three floors, organised into five themes. There are around 130 items: manuscripts, sculptures, panels, bindings, liturgical objects, reliquaries and goldsmith’s work.
Key pieces include the Lothar Cross, from around the year 1000, covered with precious stones; the bust of Charlemagne, a gilded silver reliquary; and the sarcophagus of Proserpina, a 3rd-century marble brought from Italy and probably used as Charlemagne’s first tomb. Also on display are items from the Shrine of Mary and objects used in coronation ceremonies.
