About Couven Museum (Couven-Museum)

The Couven Museum shows how Aachen’s bourgeoisie lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. It occupies the Haus Monheim in the Hühnermarkt, a few steps from the town hall. The name honors the Couven family of architects, who shaped the city’s baroque.

The museum originally opened in 1929 in another house reconstructed by Jakob Couven in the 1760s, which was destroyed by bombing in 1943. The city bought the Haus Monheim in 1953, and the museum reopened there in 1958.

The furnished rooms cover styles from the mid-18th century to Biedermeier, with furniture, tableware, paintings and everyday objects. On the ground floor, a reconstructed pharmacy recalls the Adler-Apotheke, which operated in the building from 1663 to 1878. The inner courtyard received a glass roof in 2003.

The museum is part of the Route Charlemagne, the route through the city’s historical sites.
