About Centre Charlemagne — Neues Stadtmuseum Aachen
The Centre Charlemagne opened in 2014 in the Katschhof, the square between the cathedral and the town hall, in a former municipal administration building from the 1950s. It is the city’s new museum and the starting point of the Route Charlemagne, the route linking Aachen’s main historic sites.
The permanent exhibition tells the story of Aachen as Charlemagne’s city. It begins with the first inhabitants and the Roman baths, moves through the Carolingian era and the centuries when the city was a coronation site, and reaches the Baroque period when Aachen was a spa frequented by European nobility.
A history lab offers hands-on experiences, such as putting on a chain mail shirt, and is popular with visitors travelling with children. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions about the Middle Ages and the region’s history.
