About Ramskop Nature Reserve
Ramskop Nature Reserve lies on the outskirts of Clanwilliam, on a slope facing the Clanwilliam dam, which impounds the Olifants River. The reserve contains a planted and maintained wildflower garden run by the town, with native species of the region, and trails that pass between beds and rocks.
The garden holds more than 350 species of regional flowers and plants, including fynbos, the low vegetation typical of the Cape, and succulents from the drier western areas. From the high point you can see the dam water, the valley’s orange orchards and the Cederberg mountains beyond.
The reserve is part of Clanwilliam’s annual wildflower exhibition, which usually takes place in late August and early September, with flower displays in the old Dutch Reformed church on the main street. That is when the garden is often at its best, though the number of blooms depends on winter rainfall.
Out of season, the site remains good for a short walk with views, preferably early morning or late afternoon when the heat is less.
