About Baralt Theatre
Teatro Baralt is named after the Zulia writer Rafael María Baralt and sits on the northwest corner of Plaza Bolívar in Maracaibo’s historic center. The first theatre with that name opened on July 24, 1883. In July 1896 it screened the first films shown in Venezuela.
That building was destroyed in 1928 and replaced by the current one, opened in 1932 in an Art Deco style, designed by architect Jerónimo Hoet. Since 1955 the theatre has been managed with participation from the Universidad del Zulia.
In 1981 Teatro Baralt was declared a national monument. Closed in 1986 for a long restoration, it reopened in 1998, with seating for about 680 people.
The theatre hosts plays, concerts, dance and film. Even if you don’t attend a performance, it’s worth seeing the façade from the square and asking at the box office whether interior visits are available.
