About Reserva Ecológica Ojos Indígenas
The Ojos Indígenas Ecological Reserve is a protected area of dry tropical forest near the airport, within the large Punta Cana residential complex. The name comes from the freshwater lagoons that emerge among limestone rocks, called by former inhabitants “ojos”: there are about a dozen of them, fed by an underground aquifer that runs to the sea.
A flat, waymarked trail crosses the forest, passing several very clear lagoons with small fish and turtles. Swimming is allowed in some, and the cool water is a relief from the heat of the eastern Dominican Republic. Signs identify native trees, medicinal plants and regional birds, and there is an area with local fauna exhibits.
The reserve is maintained by a foundation linked to the residential complex, which works on research and preservation of reefs and coastal vegetation. It serves as a counterpoint to the beaches: a few‑hour walk to see how the landscape of the eastern tip looked before the hotels.
