About Findlater Castle
The ruins of Findlater Castle stand on the edge of a cliff over the sea, about 4 km east of Cullen, between the village and Sandend beach. Parts of the walls and rooms were cut into the rock itself, and what remains looks as if it emerges from the cliff.
The castle was fortified in the 15th century by the Ogilvy family, local lords, and abandoned in the 17th century when the family moved to Cullen House near the village. Since then the ruins have been worn away by wind and sea.
The ruins are unstable and surrounded by cliffs, and visits are made from the viewpoint on the cliff top, from which you can see the castle, Sandend Bay and the coast. A path from the road leads there in a few minutes.
