About Plaza de Armas of Piura
The Plaza de Armas is the starting point for any walk through Piura. Tamarind trees planted more than a century ago shade the benches, an advantage in a city where the heat lasts all year. Around it are the city hall and the cathedral.
In the center of the square is the statue of Liberty, which locals call La Pola. The female figure is an allegory of liberty and was presented to the city by President José Balta in 1870.
The cathedral, on calle Huancavelica, originated as a church in 1588, dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption and Saint Michael the Archangel. Inside, the churrigueresque altarpiece of the Virgin of Fátima, carved in cedar and covered in gold, is considered one of the first of its kind in Peru. The main altar was rebuilt after the 1912 earthquake by the Spanish sculptor Julián Alagua.
Next door, on the same calle Huancavelica, the Ignacio Merino exhibition hall of the Central Reserve Bank displays works by the Piuran painter and pieces of the Vicús culture.
