About Church of San Francisco of Piura
The church of San Francisco is located in downtown Piura, at the corner of calle Lima and malecón Eguiguren, near the river. It is what remains of the former cloister built by the Franciscans, originating in the 17th century with works from the 18th century.
The building preserves one of the city's most remembered moments: on January 4, 1821, in the church’s atrium, Piura proclaimed its independence from Spain, months before the proclamation in Lima.
The church was declared a national monument in 1969 and in 1980. The interior is simple, with a neoclassical-style altar.
The esplanade in front of the church is used for the January 4 civic commemorations.
