About Casa Museo Grau

Miguel Grau was born in Piura and spent part of his childhood in this house on calle Tacna in the city center. Grau is Peru's greatest naval hero: he died on October 8, 1879, in the Battle of Angamos during the War of the Pacific, commanding the monitor Huáscar.

The house is one of the best-preserved quincha and adobe buildings from the late 18th century in Piura. It retains the entrance hall, the large rooms and the garden at the back, as in houses of the period.

Since 1964 it has operated as a museum. The rooms display family objects, photographs, letters, diplomas and documents from Grau's life and career, as well as the room where he is said to have been born, with the cradle, and a replica of the monitor Huáscar.

The visit helps to understand Grau's significance in the nation's memory: October 8 is a national holiday in Peru dedicated to the Battle of Angamos.
