About Calle Comercio de Catacaos
Catacaos is about 12 km south of Piura and is known as the craft capital of the region. Calle Comercio is the town's heart: a street of colorful portals with more than two centuries of history, where artisans sell and make their work.
The portals display gold and silver filigree jewelry, such as earrings called dormilonas, toquilla straw hats, ceramics, leather and carved wood. Catacaos silver filigree is recognized as Cultural Heritage of the Nation.
Near the square is the Church of San Juan Bautista, the town's first church, originally from 1547 and rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century. It is the center of Catacaos Holy Week, declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation, with processions that fill the town's streets.
Catacaos is also known for its picanterías, which serve dishes of Bajo Piura, and it is the home of malarrabia, a Holy Week dish.
