San Juan Bautista – Misiones Capital

How to get there

  • Aeropuerto Internacional Silvio Pettirossi (ASU) Luque · 210 km

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

Via the PY01: from Asunción it’s 196 km, about three hours by car, and buses heading south stop in the town. From Encarnación, the same road goes north passing San Ignacio Guazú. The nearest international airport is Silvio Pettirossi in Luque, in the Asunción metro area.

How many days

One day is enough for Mangoré’s house, the cathedral, and the central squares. Reserve an extra day for the Jesuit museums of San Ignacio Guazú, about 30 km away, and Santa María de Fe, on an 11 km turnoff from the PY01.

When to go

Summer, from December to February, is hot and highs can exceed 35 °C. In winter, from June to August, early mornings can be near 0 °C. Autumn and spring usually have milder days. In January, the town celebrates its founding anniversary on January 26 and holds the batiburrillo festival.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

You don’t need one to walk the center, which is explored on foot. For the museums of San Ignacio Guazú and Santa María de Fe a car makes things easier: PY01 buses take you to San Ignacio, but Santa María de Fe lies off the main road.
