About The Remarkables

The Remarkables are the mountain range that rises east of Queenstown, beside Lake Wakatipu, with jagged peaks exceeding 2,300 meters. The range runs north–south along the lake and forms a dramatic backdrop visible from the town and waterfront.

In winter, from June to September, The Remarkables ski area operates in a bowl on the slope, with runs for beginners and intermediates and terrain for snowboarders. The access road climbs from Frankton on winding sections and may require chains in snowy conditions; there are buses from town during the season.

In summer the ski road leads to high-altitude trails, such as the route up to Lake Alta, a small glacial lake near the summit. The mountains also form the backdrop for photos taken from the Queenstown Gardens and the waterfront, with snow for much of the year.
