About Buckingham Street

Buckingham Street is Arrowtown’s main street and contains most of the gold-era buildings. Stone and timber façades, with verandas and painted signs, house shops, cafés and restaurants, and the street preserves the scale of a 19th-century village.

At the western end of the street are seven miners’ cottages from the 1870s, protected as heritage, small and in a row, showing how miners’ families lived. Surrounding trees planted by early settlers—such as plane, oak and poplar—provide shade in summer and turn yellow and red in autumn.

The street is the center of Arrowtown’s autumn festival in April and the starting point for walks along the Arrow River and to the Chinese settlement, both just minutes away.
