About MTG Hawke's Bay

The MTG Hawke's Bay (Museum Theatre Gallery) brings together Hawke's Bay’s museum, art gallery and the municipal theatre in a complex in central Napier, facing the Marine Parade. The building combines an older section with a modern glass wing overlooking the sea.

The most visited exhibition covers the earthquake of February 3, 1931. Photographs, films from the time and survivor testimonies show the destruction of Napier and Hastings, the fires, the rescues and the rebuilding that gave the city its current appearance.

Other galleries hold the region’s Māori collections, linked to the Ngāti Kahungunu tribe, with carvings, weaving and everyday objects, plus holdings of decorative arts, design and New Zealand art, with temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

Admission to the permanent exhibitions is often free for local residents; for others, check the current price list.
