The city
What to expect from Matamata.
Matamata is a small rural town at the foot of the Kaimai Range, known for breeding racehorses and for being close to Hobbiton, the movie set of the Shire, about 10 km away. The information center, with a hobbit-house facade, is the departure point for tours. To the north, Wairere Falls is the tallest waterfall on the North Island.
