About Lake Te Anau
Lake Te Anau is the largest lake on the South Island and the second largest in New Zealand, after only Taupō. It occupies a valley carved by glaciers on the eastern edge of Fiordland, with three arms — North, Middle and South Fiord — that extend into forested mountains.
The town of Te Anau sits on the southeast shore. The lakefront has a trail that follows the water from the town centre to the bird sanctuary and the lake outlet, where the Kepler Track begins, with pebbly beaches and views of the mountains across the water. On calm days the water mirrors the peaks.
Boats depart from the jetty to the glowworm caves and to the start of the Milford Track at the far end of the lake, as well as for boat and kayak trips. The water is cold in every season.
