About Lake Manapouri
Lake Manapouri sits in a glacial valley among the Fiordland mountains, south of Lake Te Anau. The eastern end, next to the village, has about 20 forested islands with bays, channels and small beaches, and the lake extends westward in arms that reach into the mountains.
In the 1960s and 1970s, a plan to raise the lake level to increase hydroelectric generation prompted the Save Manapouri campaign, which gathered thousands of signatures and is considered the country’s first major environmental movement. The lake level was kept, and a monument in the village commemorates the campaign.
Besides the boats to Doubtful Sound that cross the lake, the eastern end is good for day kayak trips among the islands from the village. Short shoreline walks, such as those from the other side of the Waiau River, showcase the lake’s forest and beaches.
