About Olavsgruva

Olavsgruva is a copper mine that operated until the second half of the 20th century, on the plateau east of Røros, in the Kojedalen area. It is part of the mining landscape recognized by UNESCO and is the most direct way to understand the work that supported the town.

The visit is always guided. The group enters through the mine gallery and descends, via stairs and passages, to about 50 meters deep, walking through sections of tunnel excavated at different times. The guides show the tools, the fire markings used to break the rock in the old mines, the carts, the rails and the water shafts. The temperature inside the mountain is usually around 5 degrees Celsius year-round.

In one of the excavated halls, the acoustics have led to concerts being held on certain dates. On the surface, the mine buildings and the visitor center have a small exhibition and a café.

Around it, the open plateau, with lakes and reindeer, shows the route the ore took by sled to the smelter in winter.
