About Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel
The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is the main church of San Miguel de Allende and the town's best-known image. The temple dates from the late 17th century, but the neo-Gothic façade and towers, in pink stone from the region, were built from 1880 by the local master builder Zeferino Gutiérrez.
It is said that Gutiérrez was inspired by postcards of European Gothic cathedrals, and the result is a façade of pinnacles and slim towers unlike any other church in Mexico. At night the façade is lit.
The interior is simpler, with neoclassical altars and a crypt. Beside it stands the Chapel of San José, and in front opens the Jardín Principal, a tree-lined square with benches, shoeshiners and vendors, the heart of the town's life.
In late September, the festival of San Miguel Arcángel fills the square with processions, dances and fireworks, and the parroquia is the center of Holy Week celebrations.
