About El Charco del Ingenio
El Charco del Ingenio is a botanical garden and nature reserve of about 67 hectares on the northeast edge of San Miguel de Allende, maintained by a civil association since the early 1990s. The name comes from a deep pool in the river, the charco, and from an old mill that used the water.
The garden has one of Mexico's largest collections of cacti and succulents, with many threatened species, housed in a conservatory and in outdoor beds. Trails lead to a canyon with rocky walls, to the old reservoir and to viewpoints with views of the town.
The area is a birdwatching site, with dozens of species, and has a ceremonial space used in traditional regional festivities.
The path is dirt and rock, with some climbs, and there is little shade. Bring water and a hat.
