About Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores

The parish of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores was built between 1712 and 1778, with a churrigueresque baroque facade in pink stone. In the early hours of 16 September 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo rang the bell and called the faithful to rise up against the Spanish government, in the act known as the Grito de Dolores.

The original bell was taken to Mexico City and is located in the National Palace, where the president rings it on the night of 15 September. There is a replica in the tower at Dolores.

The interior has gilded baroque altarpieces. In front, the Jardín Grande is a tree-lined plaza with a statue of Hidalgo, benches, vendors and ice cream carts.

On the night of 15 September the town holds the Grito celebration, and in some years the president comes to give the Grito at the parish itself.
