About Templo de San Juan Bautista
The church of San Juan Bautista is in the main square of San Juan Chamula. From the outside it is a simple colonial church, white, with an entrance arch painted green, blue, and yellow. Inside it is very different from a typical Catholic church.
There are no pews or regular Masses. The floor is covered with pine needles, and families sit in groups, lighting rows of colored candles on the floor and praying in Tsotsil before images of saints lined up along the walls, each with a mirror on the chest. In some healing rituals, led by healers, eggs, posh (the local cane spirit), soft drinks, and chickens are used.
Saint John the Baptist is the most venerated saint, more than Christ, and the church is the center of the community's religious life, which has its own authorities and rules. Visitor entry is allowed with a ticket purchased at the town hall.
Photographing or filming inside the church is usually prohibited, and the rule is enforced by the community itself. Visits should be made in silence and with respect.
