About Centro histórico de Comitán

The historic center of Comitán de Domínguez spreads around the main plaza, on a hill of steep streets. The houses are low, with clay roofs, wooden doors, and brightly painted façades, and many keep interior courtyards with plants.

In the plaza are the bandstand, benches under the trees, and the church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, built by the Dominicans in the 16th century, with a tower showing mudéjar influence. Nearby are the house-museum of doctor and politician Belisario Domínguez, who gives the town its name, and the Hermila Domínguez art museum.

Other churches, such as San Caralampio, with its own small square, complete the visit. The town is tranquil and less visited than San Cristóbal.

Comitán is also the homeland of writer Rosario Castellanos, who portrayed the town in her books.
