About Centro histórico e Misión de San José del Cabo
The historic center of San José del Cabo is organized around Plaza Mijares, with a bandstand, trees, and the mission church of San José. The mission was founded by the Jesuits in 1730, on the banks of the San José River, to catechize the Pericú people; today’s church was rebuilt in the 20th century on the site of the original.
Above the church door, a tile panel shows a scene from the Pericú revolt of 1734 against the missionaries. Around the plaza are 19th-century adobe and stone houses, now occupied by restaurants, craft shops, and silver stores.
Behind the church, Obregón and Morelos streets form the so-called art district, with galleries of Mexican and foreign painters and sculptors. On some nights of the week during the winter season, the galleries stay open later for art walks.
The center is small, flat, and can be explored on foot in a short time. It is the part of Los Cabos that feels most like a Mexican town, away from the resorts.
