About Villa romaine d'Echternach (Villa Romana de Echternach)

The villa romana of Echternach was discovered in 1975 during construction of the artificial lake and is among the largest Roman villas known north of the Alps. Built in the 1st century, it was the center of a large rural estate, with a manor house, baths, columned courtyards and gardens, and was enlarged and used until the late 4th century, when the region suffered invasions.

What can be seen today are the foundations and bases of the walls, which show the house plan: the façade with a colonnaded gallery facing the valley, the dozens of rooms around the courtyards, the bathing rooms with underfloor heating and the water channels. Panels explain the function of each part.

A visitors' pavilion next to the ruins displays objects found in the excavations and reconstructions of how the villa looked, with decoration, furniture and the daily life of the owners and workers on the estate.

The site lies on the route between Echternach's center and the lake, and the visit combines well with a walk along the shore. It is maintained by the National Museum of Archaeology, History and Art.
