About Châteaux de Beaufort (Castelos de Beaufort)
Beaufort is on the Mullerthal plateau, about 15 km from Echternach, and has two castles standing next to each other. The medieval castle, built in stages between 1050 and 1650, sits on a sandstone rock above a valley and, abandoned in the 17th century, became a ruin. It was restored and opened to the public in 1932.
The visit to the ruins can be self-guided or guided and follows the walls, the bridge over the moat, the towers, the kitchen, the well and the rooms, with spiral staircases and viewpoints over the valley and the castle lake. The ensemble clearly shows the phases of a regional castle, from the initial keep to the fortified residence.
Beside it, the Renaissance castle was built in 1649 by Governor Jean-Georges de Beck, when the medieval castle ceased to be inhabited. The visit, only with a guide, shows the halls, the furnishings and the life of the last resident, and ends with a tasting of Cassero, a cassis liqueur produced in Beaufort.
The castle is usually open from mid-March to mid-November. The village has a small lake and is a stop on the Mullerthal Trail, with paths that lead to the plateau’s rock formations.
