About Vittoriano
The Vittoriano, officially Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II, honors the first king of unified Italy. It was inaugurated in 1911, on the fiftieth anniversary of unification, and completed in 1935. The white Botticino marble from Lombardy makes the building stand out among Rome’s ochre tones.
At the center is the Altare della Patria, with the statue of the goddess Roma and, since 1921, the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded day and night by military personnel; the changing of the guard usually takes place every hour. Above is the large bronze equestrian statue of the king.
At the top, two propylea support the bronze quadrigas of Unity and Liberty. Glass panoramic elevators rise to the Terrazza delle Quadrighe, the highest point of the complex, with 360-degree views over the Coliseu, the Fóruns Imperiais, the Campidoglio and the historic center.
The lower terraces can be visited on foot. Inside the monument is the Museu do Risorgimento, about Italian unification. The panoramic elevator requires a ticket.
