About Villa d'Este

Villa d'Este sits high above the town of Tivoli, on the slope of the Montes Tiburtinos, about 30 km east of Rome. It was created in the 16th century by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, son of Lucrécia Bórgia, who turned an old convent into a summer palace. The gardens were designed by the architect and archaeologist Pirro Ligorio. Since 2001 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The palace has rooms with Mannerist frescoes, but the main attraction is the gardens, which descend the slope in terraces. The water comes from the river Aniene and flows solely by gravity, feeding hundreds of fountains, cascades, reflecting pools and water features.

Among the best known are the Fontana dell'Organo, which plays music by the pressure of the water at set times, the Fontana di Nettuno with its large jets, and the Viale delle Cento Fontane, an avenue with three rows of small spouts and moss-covered masks. The Rometta reproduces ancient Rome in miniature.

The gardens had a major influence on European landscape design. The route has many stairs and ramps, and the visit pairs well with Villa Adriana, in the lower part of Tivoli, on the same day.
