About Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti

The Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti, known as the Spanish Steps, was built between 1723 and 1726 to a design by Francesco De Sanctis. It links the Piazza di Spagna below to the French church of Trinità dei Monti above, and has 135 steps arranged in flights that open and close.

At the foot of the stair is the Fontana della Barcaccia, shaped like a half-sunken boat, by Pietro Bernini with his son Gian Lorenzo. Next to it, the house where the English poet John Keats died is now a museum.

From the top, beside the obelisk of Trinità dei Monti, the view stretches over the rooftops to St. Peter's dome. Facing the stair begins Via Condotti, the street of major fashion houses.

To protect the monument, it is forbidden to sit on the steps or to eat there. You may climb up and down normally. From the top, a path continues to the Pincio terrace and the Villa Borghese park.
