About Quartiere Coppedè

The Quartiere Coppedè is not exactly a neighborhood, but a complex of about 18 palaces and 27 houses designed by Florentine architect Gino Coppedè and his students in the early decades of the 20th century. It lies in the Trieste district, northeast of the center, and is arranged around the Piazza Mincio.

The style mixes everything: medieval, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Art Nouveau and even Assyrian and Egyptian references. The façades feature towers, iron balconies, frescoes, mosaics, masks and sculpted animals. The main entrance is a large arch between two buildings on Via Tagliamento, with an iron chandelier hanging in the middle.

On the Piazza Mincio are the Fontana delle Rane (Fountain of the Frogs), with stone frogs spouting water, the Palazzo del Ragno, with a spider on its façade, and the Villini delle Fate, the "little fairy houses", with paintings of Florence, Rome and Venice and phrases in archaic Italian.

It’s a short walk, for those who have already seen the classic sights and want to discover another side of Rome. The buildings are residential and are viewed from the street.
