About Galleria Doria Pamphilj
The Galleria Doria Pamphilj occupies the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj on the Via del Corso, between Piazza Venezia and the Pantheon. It is one of Rome’s largest private art collections and still belongs to the princely Doria Pamphilj family, who continue to live in part of the palace. Most works date from the 16th and 17th centuries.
The highlight is the portrait of Pope Inocêncio X, of the Pamphilj family, painted by Diego Velázquez in 1650, displayed in a small room next to the bust of the same pope sculpted by Bernini. The collection also includes two early Caravaggios, Repouso na Fuga para o Egito and Madalena Penitente, as well as works by Titian, Raphael, Annibale Carracci, Guercino and Claude Lorrain.
The route passes through the palace’s state rooms. The Galleria degli Specchi, a corridor of mirrors and gilded frescoes that evokes Versailles, is one of the most photographed spaces. The paintings are hung from floor to ceiling, as in old private galleries, numbered and without large explanatory labels.
Being outside the circuit of the major museums, the visit is usually peaceful. The audio guide, included with admission, tells the story of the family and the works and helps you navigate the arrangement of the paintings.
