About Galleria Borghese
The Galleria Borghese occupies the Casino Borghese, built from 1613 for Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V and one of the greatest art collectors of his time. He was the first major patron of the young Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The sculptures by Bernini are the focus of the visit: Apollo and Daphne, with the nymph turning into laurel before the god; the Rape of Proserpina, with Pluto's fingers sinking into the marble thigh; and David, at the moment of throwing the stone. In the same house is Antonio Canova's Paolina Borghese, Napoleon's sister portrayed as Venus.
In the picture gallery, on the upper floor, there are several canvases by Caravaggio, such as Boy with a Basket of Fruit and David with the Head of Goliath, as well as Raphael's Deposition and Titian's Sacred and Profane Love.
Visits are conducted in shifts of about two hours, with a limited number of visitors, and reservations are mandatory. The gallery is inside the Villa Borghese park and usually closes on Mondays.
