About Fontana di Trevi

The Fontana di Trevi was built between 1732 and 1762, designed by Nicola Salvi and finished by Giuseppe Pannini. It occupies the entire façade of the Palazzo Poli and marks the end point of the Aqua Virgo, a Roman aqueduct from the 1st century BC that still supplies the fountain.

In the center, the god Ocean drives a shell-shaped chariot pulled by seahorses, one calm and one restless, symbols of the moods of the sea. On the sides, statues represent Abundance and Health, and the reliefs tell the legend of the young woman who showed the spring to Roman soldiers.

Tradition says to throw a coin over your shoulder with your right hand over your left shoulder to return to Rome. The coins are regularly collected and go to charity. The fountain appeared in films such as La Dolce Vita by Fellini.

The area closest to the water, by the edge, has controlled access and a limited number of people. During the day, tourists pay for a ticket to descend to the edge; at night access is free. The square around it is open. It is not allowed to sit on the edge, eat there, or enter the water.
