About Castel Sant'Angelo
Castel Sant'Angelo began as the mausoleum of Emperor Adrian, built in the 2nd century AD on the bank of the Tiber. Over time the tomb became part of Rome's walls and later a fortress, prison and residence of the popes in times of danger.
The name comes from the vision that, according to tradition, Pope Gregory the Great had in 590: an angel sheathing his sword atop the building, announcing the end of a plague. The bronze statue of the Archangel Michael on the summit commemorates this story.
The Passetto di Borgo, an elevated corridor above the wall, links the castle to the Vatican. It was by this route that Pope Clement VII escaped during the Sack of Rome in 1527. Inside, the visit climbs the Roman mausoleum's spiral ramp up to the papal apartments decorated with frescoes and the Angel's terrace.
In front, the Ponte Sant'Angelo, built by Adrian, features angel statues made by Bernini's pupils from his designs. The castle is the setting for the final act of Puccini's opera Tosca.
