About Wereldmuseum Rotterdam

The Wereldmuseum Rotterdam occupies the former building of the Royal Yacht Club, dating from 1851, on Willemskade, facing the Nieuwe Maas. The club received objects donated by shipowners, scientists and collectors, and in 1885 the city turned the collection into a municipal ethnology museum.

The collection grew with items brought by Dutch sailors, traders, military personnel and missionaries from various parts of the world, reaching about 110,000 objects, plus photographs. Today the museum is part of the Wereldmuseum, which also includes branches in Amsterdam and Leiden.

The Superstraat exhibition explains how Rotterdam, a port city, filled with people and objects from around the world. Temporary exhibitions deal with art and culture from other continents.

The building lies between the Erasmusbrug and the Veerhaven quay, where historic sailing ships are moored, just a few minutes from the Spido quay.
