About Rainbow Reef (Rainbow Reef)

The Rainbow Reef lies in the Somosomo Strait, the channel between Taveuni and Vanua Levu, and is one of the best-known dive areas in the South Pacific. Currents through the strait bring nutrients that feed brightly colored soft corals, which open when the water flows and give the reef its name.

The most famous site is the Great White Wall, a wall covered in white and lilac soft corals that drops toward the depths, reached via a reef tunnel. Other sites feature walls, coral heads and channels, with schools of reef fish, turtles and occasionally reef sharks.

Because dives depend on the current, operators choose sites and timings according to the tide. There are also snorkeling trips in the shallower parts of the reef for non-divers.

Boats depart from Taveuni—both the west coast and Matei—as well as from the Vanua Levu side.
