What the guide covers

The guide starts with Nadi and Denarau, the entry point for most travelers, and continues to the most visited islands: the Mamanuca, near Denarau, and the Yasawa chain. On Viti Levu, the largest island, are the Coral Coast, including Sigatoka and Natadola, and Suva, the capital, with Pacific Harbour and Beqa Island.

Farther afield are Levuka, the first capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Taveuni and Savusavu in the north, and Kadavu in the south. Each destination groups the islands and towns of the region, what to do in each, attractions with their own pages, when to go, and how to get there.

Provinces and groups

Fiji is divided into 14 provinces, and Rotuma, a Polynesian island isolated to the north, is a dependency with its own council. The guide organizes towns by province. To make travel easier, the provinces are presented in four groups: the West (Nadi and the islands), Suva and Pacific Harbour, Vanua Levu and Taveuni, and the Eastern Islands.

Many places in the guide are entire islands, because that is how people travel in Fiji. Names are shown as they are used locally. In Fijian orthography, c sounds like the English th, q like ng, and b like mb: Beqa is pronounced something like mbênga, and Cakaudrove, thakaundrove.

How to travel around Fiji

Fiji has more than 300 islands, and travel between them is by boat, seaplane, or domestic flight. Boats to the Mamanuca and the Yasawa depart from Denarau marina, and Taveuni, Savusavu, Labasa, Kadavu, and Levuka have domestic flights from Nadi or Suva. On Viti Levu, the road that encircles the island links Nadi, the Coral Coast, Suva, and the northern coast.

The time zone is UTC+12 year-round. Fiji is in the Southern Hemisphere, and the 180° meridian passes through Taveuni, without changing the date within the country.

Visiting Fijian villages

Much of Fiji’s population lives in traditional villages. A visit requires an invitation or a guide, clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and usually the kava ceremony (sevusevu), in which the visitor brings the kava root as a gift. The guide’s texts indicate when a village visit is included as part of a tour.

Why there are no prices

Outside Brazil, the guide does not show prices for tours or tickets, because they change frequently. When there is an entrance fee or charge, the text notes it, and the amount should be checked before you go.

How the content is made

The information for each place is researched from official sources such as Fiji’s tourism authority, the Fijian government, the parks, and UNESCO, and checked before publication.

The pictures in this guide are illustrations based on the real place, not photographs, and may differ from it. Photos sent by travelers appear separately, as travelers' photos.

If you find any information that differs, write to us: fixing it is quicker than it seems.

All of Cidade Turismo
