About 180th Meridian (180th Meridian)

The 180° meridian is the line of longitude opposite the Greenwich meridian, and Taveuni is one of the few inhabited lands it crosses. Near Waiyevo, on the island’s west coast, a plaque marks the spot on a lawn beside the road and the sea.

At the marker, visitors often take photos with one foot on each side of the line—one in the western hemisphere and the other in the eastern. In other parts of the island the line runs through land and plantations without any sign.

The meridian was once the reference for the international date line, but the line was shifted to go around Fiji. Therefore the date is the same throughout the country, and crossing the marker does not change the day.

The visit is brief and is done on the route between Waiyevo and Somosomo, combined with the Waitavala slide, which is nearby.
