About Lake Tagimaucia (Lake Tagimaucia)
Lake Tagimaucia occupies the crater of an ancient volcano in the central mountains of Taveuni, at about 800 metres altitude. The water is partly covered by floating vegetation, and the surrounding cloud forest is wet, with mosses, ferns and trees draped in epiphytes.
The lake gives its name to the tagimaucia, Fiji’s national flower, a climbing plant with red and white blooms that grows in Taveuni’s mountains. The flower usually appears from October to February, and a local legend says it was born from the tears of a young woman who fled to the mountain to avoid marrying a man she did not love.
The trail starts from the coast near Somosomo and climbs through the forest for about 3 to 4 hours, with stretches of deep mud, roots and steep ascents. The hike is done with a village guide, who also owns the land.
It is one of Fiji’s most demanding trails and requires a full day, with a very early start. The skies often close in over the mountains in the afternoon, so it’s best to reach the lake before midday.
