About Namena Marine Reserve (Namena Marine Reserve)
The Namena Marine Reserve surrounds Namenalala Island and the Namena reef, in the sea between Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, about 25 km south of Savusavu. It is one of Fiji’s largest marine protected areas, established by the villages of Kubulau, who hold traditional fishing rights, with support from conservation organizations.
The reef features walls, coral bommies and channels with hard and soft corals, schools of reef fish, turtles, reef sharks and, seasonally, passing pelagic species. Namenalala Island is also a nesting site for turtles and seabird colonies.
Visits are run by dive operators from Savusavu and by boats that tour the area. Divers pay a fee that goes to the villages and funds enforcement of the reserve.
Trips are full-day because of the distance and depend on sea conditions.
