About Waisali Rainforest Reserve (Waisali Rainforest Reserve)
The Waisali Forest Reserve lies in the mountains of southern Vanua Levu, about 20 km from Savusavu, beside the road that crosses the island toward Labasa. It is an area of roughly 120 hectares of tropical forest, protected and managed by Fiji’s National Trust together with the local community.
A short trail descends through the forest, among tall trees, giant ferns and orchids, to a small waterfall with a pool. The forest is home to birds found only in Fiji, such as the orange dove, with vivid orange plumage, and several species of parrots and flycatchers.
The reserve is also important for protecting the springs that supply the region. The visitor center, when open, provides information about the forest and its species.
The visit pairs well with a trip to Labasa or a nature day trip from Savusavu.
