Get to know the place
San Diego brings together urban programs and coastline in a mild-climate region. Balboa Park arranges gardens and museums, the San Diego Zoo requires a full day, and the USS Midway lets you tour an aircraft carrier moored near downtown.
La Jolla combines coves and coastal paths, while Coronado shifts the bay’s perspective and offers an extensive beach. SeaWorld adds a theme park and marine life attractions; for younger children, Carlsbad has LEGOLAND California and Chula Vista hosts Sesame Place.
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is in Escondido, inland, and not next to the Balboa Park zoo. Allocating a full day to each major park avoids long transfers after many hours of walking.

San Diego combines Balboa Park and its zoo, the USS Midway on the bay, and the La Jolla coastline. SeaWorld is in the Mission Bay area; grouping activities by region gives more time to walk and visit each site.
Coronado lies opposite Downtown San Diego, connected by bridge and passenger ferry. Coronado Beach and the waterfront paths along the bay allow a beach-and-walk stage without relying on large parks.
Carlsbad is north of San Diego and hosts LEGOLAND California. Carlsbad State Beach allows you to combine a park day with another coastal stop, without treating the town merely as parking for one attraction.
Escondido is the base for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, inland north of San Diego. The park uses large habitat areas and routes different from the urban zoo, requiring a dedicated day to visit.
Chula Vista lies south of San Diego and hosts Sesame Place San Diego, a family-focused park for children. Dry attractions and water activities have schedules that must be checked separately.

Before you go
A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.
The coast is usually mild between April and June and between September and October; July and August are busier. The water remains cold for much of the year, and from November to March it can rain more.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Five to eight days to pick parks, museums and the coast. Each additional park should get a long session or its own day.
Downtown serves the bay; Mission Bay brings SeaWorld and the coast closer. Carlsbad makes LEGOLAND more accessible, while Coronado is convenient for a beach base.
Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
