About Museo do Mar de Galicia

The Museo do Mar de Galicia is in the Alcabre neighbourhood on the edge of the ria of Vigo, near Samil beach. It occupies the premises of a former canning factory and a slaughterhouse, renovated and expanded by architects Aldo Rossi, an Italian, and César Portela, a Galician, and opened in 2002.

There are models, boats, tools, photographs and videos.

An aquarium displays species from the Galician rias, and a stone lighthouse at the end of the quay, part of Rossi's project, has become the museum's image. Outdoors there are boats and a castro excavated on the site itself.

From the quay you can see the ria, with mussel nurseries and the bateas floating on the water.
